7 Keto Dhea Side Effects: Should You Be Worried?
Since Dr. Oz’s recent recommendation on his popular website, 7 Keto has been making waves and headlines with its supposed abilities to safely boost metabolism.
Preliminary studies are promising, and if you’re looking to lose those last few pounds, then a healthy dose of this unique compound may be just what you need to get your weight loss back on track.
In a recent study, individuals who were put on reduced calorie diets lost more weight than those who took a placebo. In as little as 1-8 weeks, these dieters experienced a significant increase in metabolism and thyroid function.
Sounds pretty good so far, wouldn’t you think?
A safe and natural alternative to the hormone DHEA, 7-Keto seems like a dream come true. No need to worry about messing around with hormones, 7-Keto seems to be like the best way to stimulate thermogenesis so you can burn more calories than ever before.
Yet is 7 Keto as safe and effective as diet pill manufacturers would have you believe?
As it turns out, there may be more to this ingredient than meets the eye.
7-Keto DHEA vs. DHEA: What’s the Difference?
7-Keto is a by-product of Dehydroepiandrosterone, a naturally produced chemical in the body. DHEA acts as a precursor to numerous hormones such as testosterone, and when used correctly, DHEA can improve quality of life, boosting physical performance, reducing body fat, and ieven increasing insulin sensitivity in men and women over 60.
Additionally, in one small six-week study, researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health observed that middle-aged individuals experienced relief from mild-to-moderate depression when taking a DHEA Supplement. Depression symptoms fell 50% in half of the study participants, researchers observed.
7-Keto DHEA is said to offer all the same benefits of DHEA, but unlike DHEA, however, 7-Keto is not converted into estrogen or testosterone. When taken orally it does not increase the levels of steroid hormones in the bloodstream – which is always an extra plus if you’re worried about throwing your hormones out of sync.
Does This Mean 7-Keto is Safer?
Dr. Ray Sahelian, MD warns dieters that “if 7-Keto DHEA has testosterone like benefits, it is likely that certain 7-Keto DHEA side effects will be due to androgen excess.” He goes on to say that “the same mechanisms and biochemical pathways that lead to the 7-Keto DHEA benefits they claim, also are involved in 7-Keto DHEA side effects. I will hold this viewpoint regarding 7-Keto DHEA until I am shown evidence to the contrary.”
In a safety study conducted both on humans and animals revealed that 7-Keto did not raise estrogen or testosterone levels or produce any other negative side effects when taken regularly for 8 weeks, but this does not mean that 7-Keto is safe for long-term use.
It is possible that 7-Keto could still result in the same side effects as its sister ingredient DHEA, so consumers will definitely want to approach this diet pill with caution.
Many individuals are concerned that the increase in thyroid hormone levels (triggered by the use of 7-Keto DHEA) may result in bone loss and trigger cardiac problems.
Because studies are still being conducted on 7-Keto DHEA, you’ll want to avoid using this supplement if you are pregnant or nursing.
Additional 7 Keto Dhea Side Effects
Everyone reacts differently to the supplementation of 7-Keto DHEA; consequently, what is safe for someone else might not necessarily be safe for you.
Some mild side effects dieters experienced while taking 7-Keto DHEA include acne and oily skin (due to increased male hormone levels), an increase in perspiration and hair loss/thinning (more among men than women), fatigue, headaches, nasal congestion, and irregular/rapid heartbeats.
Women may also experience abnormal menses, insomnia, and hot flashes.
On the other hand, it is unknown if these side effects are a direct result of 7-Keto DHEA or a different reason entirely. Until more research is conducted, it is best to exercise caution before using this ingredient.
7-Keto DHEA is still under research, and like all potential new ingredients for weight loss, it should be treated with the utmost caution and care.
While it seems that 7-Keto DHEA could be used safely on a short-term basis, consumers will want to avoid products that utilize this ingredient on a long-term basis until further research has been conducted.
